MLK Celebration on January 16
/The Leisure World community Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, co-sponsored by The Chapel and the Leisure World Association for African American Culture will focus on the legacy of the Freedom Riders. Freedom Riders drew national attention and helped force southern states to abide by Supreme Court rulings against segregation in public spaces. They were ordinary people with strong moral convictions who put their lives on the line for change.
Our preacher for the service is Rev. Reginald M. Green who was a Freedom Rider. He participated in student sit-ins, leading to time in a Mississippi jail. Rev. Green retired after an illustrative forty year career in ministry as pastor of Walker Memorial Baptist Church. The service will be at 10:00 am, and all are invited.
